My First Triathlon: Training Part I

I decided to finally do a triathlon.

I’ve participated in each of the portions of a triathlon, whether it be at a swim meet, the Tour de Cure cycle event or my many half marathons, 10ks, 5ks, and fun runs. But I’ve never competed in a triathlon.

Why did I finally make this decision? I’m not 100% sure. Only that it’s been at the back of my mind for years (I’m noticing that having things in the back of my mind seems to be a habit). This year is the year I’ve decided to accomplish more personal achievements for myself. Hence, a triathlon!

Here I am with some of the Triathlon Training group before our Wednesday night run.

I am really enjoying training with a team. My previous running events have mostly been a solo journey with a few running buddies to keep me company every now and then. And although a triathlon is a solo event, it’s really great to be training with other people. I feel like I’m a part of something greater because I’m on a team. Training with them has actually made me push myself because I can get pretty competitive around other people. It’s also been fun to socialize and make new friends! I enjoy the camaraderie and the support I get from other participants and the coaches.

Speaking of coaches, I love the feedback from the coaches. It’s refreshing to see what I can do to improve my running form or how I can cycle more efficiently. Although I think that my many years of competitive swimming has made my swim technique flawless, I received a suggestion where I needed to slightly tweak my hand/arm that has improved my freestyle stroke.

My first transition practice! I tweaked my transition setup right after I took this picture.

I want my first triathlon to be fantastic in every way! Who knows? Maybe this is the start of a new adventure/hobby for me!

Anyways, we are in Week 4 of Triathlon Training and I am loving this process of pushing my body to a whole different level. I can’t wait to see where I am a couple weeks from now.
